Partition needed for system booting - can only choose Use external bootloader

Post by runningfox78 »

I used the old version on my old Windows 7.
Dynamic disk and Windows RAID 1.
Had no issues.

Now on my new PC with Windows 10.
Also with Dynamic Disk and Windows RAID 1.
But now when running Wizard to excrypt c:\ I cannot choose HDD as booting device.
Only "use external bootloader" can be choosed.

Can anyone help?
I was hoping this new version would help - but unfortunately not.

Best regards
Martin

That's Strange...

I did some testing with a VMWare virtual machine with dynamic volumes and mirroring of the system partition and it seamed to work fine on booth; UEFI and BIOS boot.

what exactly happens?
cant you select the drop down option to install to HDD?
or when you select it it does not show any hdd's?

Cheers

Hi David,

Sorry for the late relpy.
(Did not get an email when forum was updated).

When Choosing what partition to boot: "Bootable HDD not found".
Can only choose external bootloader.
Usually Windows 10 has 3 partitions, but I only have two.
Maybe it cannot boot on an dynamicdisk partition.

Se my two attachments.

Best regards

hmm... that is a different config from mine, on my system the efi partition itself was not mirrored....
How do I get a setup as you have?
With diskmgmt.msc I can't add a mirror for the uefi system partition only for the windows partition.

Sorry for the email notification issue will check it out when i find some time.

Thank you for your help I really appreciate that.

My computer is a MAC mini. It has BIOS and UEFI it depends on the booting device. It just swaps between them. I cannot choose it in a settings menu or something like that.
When it was using Windows 7 the install media used BIOS and Windows was installed like that.
A full mirror worked for years.

When I wanted to use Windows 10, I could not get full mirroring working.
The booting system partition could not be mirrored – just like you.
Then I changed the Windows 10 install media to use BIOS instead of EFI.
https://rufus.ie/

That made the deference.
I also customized the partitions in the setup, so I only had two.

I have a test VM that have the same issue.
If BIOS is chosen in Advanced, a full mirror can be created after Windows 10 install.

Ok, with a bios boot I could reproduce the issue,
I will look into how to solve that properly,
but as a workaround for now what worked for me just fine was to install manually through the Tools menu the bootloader to booth disks and when encrypting the system volume skip the external boot-loader creation, as we already have some.
